Diagnostic imaging is often the largest single line item in a facility's capital equipment budget, and the wrong choice can lock a hospital into years of avoidable service costs. Before comparing brands, start with the clinical questions your imaging department must answer every day.

Match modality to case mix

Ultrasound is the workhorse for obstetrics, cardiology screening, and point-of-care assessment. X-ray remains essential for trauma, chest, and orthopaedic work. CT earns its cost in emergency and oncology pathways, while MRI is justified where neurology, musculoskeletal, and complex oncology volumes are consistently high.

Budget for the full lifecycle

Purchase price is rarely more than half of the true cost. Factor in installation, room shielding, power and cooling upgrades, consumables, annual service contracts, and operator training. A slightly more expensive system with a strong local service presence usually outperforms a cheaper unit with slow parts supply.

Plan the room, not just the machine

Floor loading, door widths, ceiling height, ventilation, and cabling routes decide whether an installation runs smoothly or stalls. Ask every vendor for a site-planning drawing before signing.

Ask about upgrade paths

Software-upgradable platforms extend useful life considerably. Confirm whether detector, coil, or reconstruction upgrades are available later, and what they cost, so today's purchase does not become tomorrow's constraint.
